Definition of a Professional Artist for WSP purposes

The Canada Council defines a professional artist as an artist who:
- has specialized training in the artistic field (not necessarily in academic institutions)
- is recognized as a professional by his or her peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition)
- is committed to devoting more time to artistic activity, if possible financially
- has a history of public presentation or publication

WSP adds that the artist is also a current or past member of one or more of the following professional associations:
Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (CAEA)
American Actors’ Equity (AEA)
British Actors’ Equity Association (BAEA)
Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists (ACTRA)
Toronto Musicians Association (TMA)
American Federation of Musicians (AFofM)
Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC)
Associated Designers of Canada (ADC)
Screen Actor’s Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA)
